A fitting memorial
What was the job?
Creating a fitting memorial for a Canadian bomber crew
What did the customer want?
Picture the scene: A heavily damaged Lancaster Bomber flying in over Lincolnshire during the second world war. The mixed-nationality crew are barely able to keep the plane in the air. They make it to within sight of the airfield, but then disaster strikes…
Heart-wrenchingly enough, they crash land just yards from the field and everyone aboard is killed. A memorial is erected for the British crew members. However, the Canadians are left un-commemorated, until the owners of what is now a golf course asked Chris Slack of S2 to carve an article of remembrance.

The highlights: Careful stonework deserving of our boys’ memory
These Canadian boys deserved a fitting remembrance and didn’t get it for a long time.
S2 were committed to creating something beautiful in recognition of their bravery and sacrifice. Our stone-carving specialist Chris set to carving the Royal Canadian Air Force’s coat of arms for installation at the crash site.
This would provide a striking memorial for the Canadian crew members.
What was the outcome?
An unveiling ceremony was held to reveal the memorial. Members of the crew’s families came to remember their ancestors’ sacrifice, as well as local veterans and dignitaries. We were told that everyone was really happy with the brilliant carving. Most importantly of all, our Canadian boys who didn’t make it back now have something to recognise their sacrifice.
